In addition to sports injuries, a large number of orthopedic patients belong to the older population, who often face challenges such as macular degeneration or reduced vision. Signage in a hospital environment therefore requires additional adaptation to ensure optimal readability, reduce the possibility of frustration, and make navigation easier.

At our request, Borjan Pavlek developed a custom typeface, with lower contrast and subtle interventions that improve performance in specific hospital conditions. This ensured clarity of information while maintaining the aesthetics of the new visual identity.

In collaboration with Andrija Mudnić, a set of pictograms was also developed, tailored to the needs of the hospital environment. The pictograms were constructed based on a grid to achieve visual consistency, and were later further humanized through micro-interventions similar to those used in the type design.

Through carefully considered typographic interventions and the humanization of pictograms, a signage system was created that combines functionality, elegance, and adaptability for users of all age groups. The emphasis is on facilitating orientation within the hospital space, providing patients and visitors with clear, intuitive guidance in an environment that is often highly stressful.

Division of the Hospital into Zones and Optimization of User Movement
The signage project for Akromion Hospital is based on a clearly defined division of the hospital space into zones. Our strategy guides users toward the appropriate zones and then, from each zone, to a specific destination. This approach allows for the gradual revelation of information, which facilitates spatial orientation and reduces the cognitive load on users. By using this methodology, the hospital becomes more intuitive and easier to navigate.

Vertical Communication and Alphanumeric Coding System
The main elevator is centrally located between the hospital’s two main wings, allowing easy access to all zones. To enable precise navigation, an alphanumeric coding system was developed and implemented throughout the hospital complex. This system is used for fire alarm communication, IP phones, and for monitoring and maintaining the facility. Each hospital room has been assigned a unique address, enabling easier identification, tracking, and faster response to operational demands.
